BetterPhoto instructor Jim Zuckerman, for instance, points out that shadows are an "integral part of picture taking. Sometimes they can be distracting, and other times they add artistry and visual impact to your images" (such as in the photo above).
"Sometimes it is ideal to show detail and texture in shadows," says Jim Z, "such as in the Caribbean composition I took in the Dominican Republic" (above).
Other times, says Jim Zuckerman, "shadows are best rendered black, as in the sand dune picture" (above).
Also, he says, "try including your own shadow in a picture sometimes. It can be a fun exercise."
